Repair Roof Boots

There are several methods and materials that can be used for repair roof boots. The simplest method to repair roof boots by repairing with metal screws or nails as long as the leak is small. The material needed to complete this project is a hammer, drill, screwdriver, shingles, and metal screws or nails.

Roof boots are installed at an angle on either side of a chimney or vent pipe. They usually have to be trimmed around any flashing due to window installation or changes in the height of the roof next to your house. Not sure if the problem is due to leaks at either end of the boot and if there’s damage to it thereafter. Here’s how to repair a roof boot.

First, determine whether or not the cause of damage at either end of the boot and if there is damage to it thereafter.

Next, remove shingles from both ends of the boot and clean up any debris on the surface. If your roof is in good condition, you can replace only one end of the roof with a new boot.

If your roof has damage from weather, wind or hail, you may have to replace two boots and use flashing before replacing shingles. Then prepare one end of the boot for installation by cutting off any old nails at an angle so that they do not tear through the metal flashing on the upper side of the roof.

Clean any old adhesive or tar from the top side with a wire brush and apply some new flexible adhesive before installing a new boot. One way to do this is by heating up the area with a propane torch to melt existing caulking and spread it evenly within flashing. Smooth out bubbles in caulk using a putty knife.

Install the boot on top of flashing in a way that screws should be set about two inches from each side so it is clear of shingles and new adhesives before you replace the shingles. If you have metal nails, drive them at an angle from below through the roof into the boot by pressing firmly and evenly. Nails can be recessed on the shingles of new metal boots using a hammer to make a flat head.

At the other end of the roof, mark where the boots will overlap and cut out any old nails before installing them with new adhesive caulk or tar, if necessary. If you have a chimney or vent pipe on your roof, you must install boots with flashing before the shingles are replaced.

Repairing roof hole

You are going to want to find the leak on your roof. You will need a flashlight, ladder, bucket, and a hammer.

1) Find the leak with the flashlight and then place it over the hole in the roof to see what size it is. Make note of where it is.

2) Go up on the ladder and place a bucket under the leak to catch water leakage.

3) Take your hammer and carefully go over each shingle with the hammer in order to test them for fracture or repelling nails. If any shingles come up easily, these are the damaged shingles that you need to replace.

4) Replace any damaged shingles that you found under step 3 by using a pry bar and carefully lifting up the shingle. Peel off any old adhesive and nail down your new shingles by following the previous steps.

5) If you find an area with water leakage that has more than one rotted shingle, remove all of them by pulling out nails with pliers or a pry bar. Then, follow the same process as in step 4 to replace all of your rotted shingles.

6) If you did not find any damaged shingles, go to another area on your roof and repeat steps 1-5.

7) After you have repaired one area or multiple areas with water leakage, check to make sure there is no more water leakage. If there is still leakage, you may need to replace the entire roof or at least a portion of it depending on your budget and how bad the damage is.

8) After you have repaired all areas with water leakage, remove the bucket from under the hole in your roof and wait for next rainstorm to see if there is still leakage.

9) If you are satisfied that the roof is repaired after a rainstorm, congratulations! With these simple steps, your roof should be fixed to last for several more years.

It’s best to do this in a small section at a time and you will need an applicator that comes with either the roofing felt repair kit or can be purchased separately from any hardware store. Fill the tank of your applicator with the roof felt repair compound and cover the area to be repaired with the compound. Allow this to dry for several hours or even overnight and then use some roof-felt adhesive caulk over the repair (this comes in a caulking tube and is available at any hardware store). You can also apply self-leveling roof compound using an acid brush.
